Chapter Sixteen

T he itinerary was simple. My name appeared as a background person. I plopped down at the desk in my room and read over it several times. I understood what they expected of me but, I couldn’t wrap my head around people paying so much to do it.

We’d dress like flappers, well the women would. The men were down for striped suits with wide legs. My job seemed simple. I had to mingle, dance, and chat with people. The party started at nine p.m. The background people were free to leave around midnight.

My costume was available for a fitting tomorrow. The night of the party, I’d arrive in street clothes, then I’d change and have my hair and make-up done in the dressing rooms provided for that evening. For this gig I’d make twenty-five hundred dollars. ​I need to learn the Charleston.

Sydney was an escort. She’d be on the arm of one of the men throwing the party. ​What do the main players make? ​Who pays for this kind of thing? ​It must cost a fortune. ​I fired up my computer and watched videos of 1920s dances for the next hour. Trying a few of the moves, gave me more confidence. Once I got the basic steps down, the dance rocked. I danced my way back and forth across my room about a million times. Tired after all the arm-swinging and step-hopping I flopped on my bed and crashed.

Driving to the club the following morning to check out my costume my phone pinged a text message. I flipped it over where it sat on the front seat, glanced down, and saw Sydney’s name pop up on the screen. I hadn’t talked to her all week. ​When I pulled into the parking lot at Masquerade, I noticed Sydney at the guardhouse. ​Yikes, she’s waiting for me. ​I sat in my car for a moment after I parked trying to figure out what I’d say to her. ​This is crazy, move it Aggie. ​As I approached the guardhouse she smiled.

“Where have you been all week? I called and texted.”

​“I’ve been busy, gotta lot going on.”

​“Too much to ignore your BFF?” She complained.

“Come on Syds, I’m not ignoring you. I’m dealing with a lot, and Mazie’s been prepping me for my interview with Jeffrey,” I lied.

She pushed my hair back off the side of my face, cocked her head to one side, and questioned me with narrowed eyes.

To keep the peace, I linked my arm through hers and we walked together to the lobby. “You’re on for the party tomorrow night too?”

​She chilled. “Yup, going to the ranch this weekend.”

“What ranch? You keep mentioning a ranch.”

​She stopped, turned, and squinted at me, “Ags, I thought I told you I say I’m going to the ranch when I do an escort gig.”

“You’re an escort too?” My eyes popped, and my mouth dropped.

“Close your mouth Ags, don’t be so shocked. I’ll tell you all about it at lunch. Today?”

“I’m not shocked. I just—I, you got a lot going on girl.
